The Spittal of Glenshee is the site of one of the oldest inns in the U.K. It is known that the site has been in continuous use since 961AD and has had a chequered history throughout the years. It is certainly at the highest altitude being just over 2,100 feet above sea level.
The name 'Spittal' has originated from the Latin word 'hospitium' meaning 'Apartment for Strangers', or from the Gaelic 'spiddeal' which means 'where the glens meet'. Four glens meet at the 'Spittal'; Glenshee, Glenbeag, Glen Lochsie, Glen Taitneach.
Close to Royal Deeside and set amidst magnificent scenery, the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel is the perfect base for hillwalkers and golfers. Horseriding, stalking, shooting, mountain biking and a hand gliding school are all available in Glenshee.

An excellent base for skiing being 8 minutes from the Glenshee Ski Slopes and close enough to give the skiing at the Lecht or Aviemore a go.

For Golfers: the highest golf course in Britain, is only 1 mile away and 10 old established golf courses, less than 50 minutes drive from the Spittal.
Horseriding through woods and over hills and glens. Stalking, shooting, fishing, mountain biking and a hang gliding school are all available in Glenshee.

* From the 7th century A.D. there existed on Mount Blair, in Glenshee, a monastery run by an Order of Celtic Monks. The Monks were a particularly hardy breed, surviving all year, with the exception of the haggis feast at Christmas, on a staple diet of a cake consisting of rough corn, fruit and nuts. This cake was known as "schroidhnutchaidhoir". While the corn was being hand ground by mortar and pestle and the cakes were being baked, the monks always maintained periods of silence and chastity. The recipe for the cake was jealously guarded for hundreds of years, but was entrusted to the innkeeper at the Spittal of Glenshee in the early 16th century by the head Abbot who feared marauding English would steal it. And so the Scrocnut survives today - and to this day is still baked to the traditional recipe. Minus unfortunately the periods of silence and chastity!!! |
